The questions people actually ask.
Including the ones couples are usually too polite to put in an email. If something you want to know isn't here, just ask me directly and I'll give you a straight answer.
Booking & pricing
01Why is your pricing on the website?
Because transparency is key. Planning a wedding is hard enough without having to submit a million enquiries just to find a quote that works for you. That said, your day has a length, a location and a shape, and the honest quote depends on all three. Enquire and you’ll get accurate pricing for every collection back quickly, with no call required and no pressure attached. However, if you do want to do a vibe check, please say so and we’ll schedule some time.
How do we secure our date?
A twenty per cent deposit and a signed contract. Until both are done the date stays open to anyone else who asks, so if you’re fairly sure it’s worth getting in early. After that the date is yours and you can go back to enjoying being engaged.
How far in advance do couples usually book?
Most book twelve to eighteen months ahead, and I’m currently taking bookings for 2027 / 2028. That said, short-notice weddings are welcome. If your date is soon, ask anyway rather than assuming I’m full.
Can we change collections after booking?
Yes. Plans change and days grow. Give me at least 30 days notice if you plan to upgrade your coverage. If you book one collection and later want more or less coverage, tell me and we’ll adjust it.
Do you travel, and does it cost extra?
Travel within the UK, outside a two hour radius from me is included in ‘the Epilogue’ collection. I’m based in the North East and shoot right across Northumberland, Yorkshire and Cumbria as standard. For destination weddings, prices start at £3500 but tell me where and when, and I’ll put an accurate number together.
Do you offer payment plans?
Yes. For those who are really keen to have me involved, but would prefer split payments for wehatever reason, I offer the following payment plan.
- 20% on booking date
- 40% eight weeks before your wedding date
- 40% four weeks after your wedding day
On the day
02How much will you direct us?
About ten percent of the day. The rest is documentary focused. When I do step in it’s clear and intentional, and mostly it’s giving you something to do rather than something to hold for minutes on end. You’ll never be arranged into a shape and told to hold still.
How long do family photographs take?
Twenty minutes, if we plan them. Send me the list in advance and nominate someone loud who knows everyone, and we’ll be finished before the drinks run out. Family groups usually overrun because nobody agreed the list beforehand, not because photographs are slow.
How long do you need us for portraits?
Twenty minutes, a couple of times. Most couples slip away between the main course and dessert and nobody notices they’ve gone. If you want a second short session earlier in the day, that’s easy to build in. You can see when the best light falls on your date using the light calculator.
Will you use flash during the ceremony?
No. No flash, no interruptions, and nothing that puts me in your videographer’s shot. Ceremonies happen once and they shouldn’t have a photographer dominating them.
Do you eat with us and do we provide a meal for you?
Yes, and it genuinely helps if I eat when / before you eat. Nothing photographable happens while everyone has a mouthful, so it’s the one part of the day I can step away without missing anything.
Having dinner away from the main crowd also gives me a chance to recharge my social batteries so that I can jump back into the evening reception with the energy needed to keep up with your drunk mates!
Do you work with a second shooter?
I work with a second photographer on some weddings, particularly larger (100 plus guests) days or where both partners are getting ready in different locations.
Will you work with our videographer?
Happily, and it makes a real difference when photographer and videographer have spoken before the day. Put us in touch a few weeks beforehand and we’ll sort out who stands where.
If you're feeling nervous
03We hate having our photo taken. Is this going to be awful?
No, and you’re in the majority. Almost nobody is comfortable in front of a camera, which is exactly why I don’t make you pose for me for most of the day. The twenty minutes of portraits are usually awkward for about zero of them, because of the relationship I focus on creating with you and our partner beforehand.
One of us is much more reluctant than the other. Does that matter?
Not at all, and it’s worth telling me beforehand. Knowing which of you would rather not be looked at changes where I stand and how I approach you. It tells me who will lead and who will follow as well who to give more attention to boost confidence if needed.
Our family situation is complicated. Can you handle that?
Yes, and you won’t be the first. Divorced parents, people who don’t speak, someone who shouldn’t end up in a frame with someone else. Tell me privately before the day, it stays between us.
What if we don't like the photographs?
It’s worth looking at complete galleries rather than a best-of grid before you book, which is why the stories are full days rather than highlights. I’d rather tell you I’m the wrong fit than take a booking that disappoints you.
We're not sure which collection we need.
That’s normal and it’s what the first conversation is for. Describe the shape of your day and I’ll tell you which one makes sense, including when that’s the cheaper one.
If something goes wrong
04What happens if it rains?
We shoot anyway, and some of the best frames come out of bad weather. Northern weddings and Northern weather go together, so I plan for it rather than hope against it. Every timeline I build has an indoor version as well as one with with my beautiful if battered golf umbrella.
What if you're ill or something happens to you?
Plans are written into the contract. If I can no longer honour the booking, I can bring in an associate to take over the day and allow me to just edit, or I can give you the option of finding someone else to take the booking.
If something serious happens to me, I have insurance!
Are you insured?
I am. Up to £10 million in public liability. Many venues ask for a certificate before the day. Give me the venue’s email address and I’ll send it to them directly.
What happens to our photographs if a memory card fails?
Each camera contains two cards which record simultaneously. Cards are backed up the same day, and files are held in more than one place until your gallery is delivered. Even at that point, RAWS are stored on hard drives and edits are stored on Dropbox.
What if we have to postpone?
Postponements happen for all sorts of reasons and they’re dealt with reasonably. As long as I am still available on your new date, I will honour your booking!
Afterwards
05How long until we get our photographs?
A preview set lands within days while it still feels like last week, and the full gallery is delivered within 8 weeks.
How many photographs do we get?
Typically, a full gallery will be anywhere from 800-1000 edited shots. Enough to tell the whole story and not so many that you never get through them.
Can we print them ourselves and share them online?
Yes. Your gallery arrives via Pic-Time at full resolution and downloadable, and you can print, share and post them however you like. They’re your photographs. If you decide to share these photos with other vendors, please remind them to tag me in anything they post as I retain the copyright. This includes venues!
Do you edit every photograph?
Yes. Every frame you receive has been individually worked on for colour and tone so the gallery holds together as one piece.
How long do you keep our files?
RAWS and catalogs are stored indefinitely. Edits are stored for up to two years. Download your gallery and back it up somewhere of your own as soon as it arrives.
Do you offer albums or prints?
Yes, these can either be put together in Pic-Time or created with me for an additional fee through Folio.
Still wondering something?
Ask me. I'd rather you asked than guessed.
Tell me your date and whatever's on your mind. You'll get full pricing back plus an honest answer, including if the honest answer is that I'm not the right fit for you.
