Old school kind of love

Caitlin and Tom met at a taekwondo club when they were six years old.

Most couples I photograph now met on an app, and there’s nothing wrong with that. But two people who have known each other for almost their whole lives are rare, and it shows in how they move around each other. There’s no performance and nothing left to prove.

Life took them away from home for a while. They moved to Manchester and built full careers there. Even so, when it came to getting married, they chose to come back to Northumberland. They married at Doxford Barns, an old barn surrounded by hay bales and open fields, close enough to home that family and old friends could simply turn up rather than travel for it.

That decision shapes a wedding more than most couples realise. When the day happens on home ground, guests arrive relaxed. They already know the roads and the pubs and each other, so the whole day settles faster. For a documentary photographer, that’s the best possible starting point, because people stop noticing the camera long before the ceremony begins.

Caitlin and Tom were clear from the start that the day would be done their way, and it was.

Where they really stood out was portrait time. After years of weddings, I can tell you that the biggest factor in how portraits turn out isn’t the location or even the light. It’s trust. Caitlin and Tom needed almost no convincing. There was no stiffness and no second-guessing a direction. They trusted the process and got on with enjoying each other. That meant I could spend the time on light and composition instead of coaxing two people into feeling comfortable, and that’s where the strongest portraits come from.

That kind of ease doesn’t happen by accident. It comes from a couple who know exactly who they are and feel no need to perform. My job is to recognise it early, protect it, and stay out of its way.

Gotcha took the evening from there, and the day finished the way the best ones do, with everyone who mattered under one roof.

It was a coming-home wedding in the truest sense.

Thank you to Ollie Glover for second shooting, and to every supplier listed below.
